Isn’t part of the attempt at discovering the life worth living subjecting views to the strongest criticism you can? I have found over the years that there is in doing philosophy a humble phase, followed by an ‘arrogant’ phase, and then a kind of Hegelian synthesis of the two - accepting what you know and what you don’t know. For example: in studying a great philosopher I assume he or she is a genius and that I am ‘at the feet of the master.’ But once I am confident that I have a fair grip on their teachings I subject it to whatever criticism I can. If I’m lucky I find an intelligent defender who I ‘attack.’ What follows is a more balanced sense of where their genius lays and where their failings show. — Thank you for your thoughtful post. It provoked me to thought.

Philosophy is the pursuit of wisdom, not “the good life”. Wisdom comes in many forms. A wise observation doesn’t need to be backed by a human living wisely, if the observation is wise in and of itself.
