@amieinchina: Sometimes cultures clash, but if we search for understanding we will often find it!! The problem is often we don't search 🥴 What do you think of this story? Do you have other examples? #china #culture #UK #culturechallenge

Yes!! I find people stereotype this a lot about Chinese people and I’m always defending them as I don’t think they’re rude at all! Just culturally different

in China if you say can i get a cup of coffee, that means you are begging a cup of coffee and do not want to pay for it

I saw a comment the other day, saying a guy went to the west studying got used to ask " Can I have a ... pls?" went through serious culture shock when he returned to China, by asking in Chinese 我能要一杯咖啡吗? which literally translated as " Can I have a cup of coffee pls?". The shop guy was so confused to ask "But you are gonna pay right?", because the shop guy was so confused if this guy wanted to buy or was begging for a cup of coffee for free. It just doesnt work that way. When in Rome, do as Romen do.

Thank you for explaining this so well. As a Chinese person living in the UK, I completely agree. In Chinese, we usually speak more directly when ordering food, and it isn’t meant to be rude—it’s just a different way of communicating. Since moving to the UK, I’ve learned to use expressions like “Could I have…” because I want to respect the local culture. I also hope people can understand that some Chinese tourists may simply not know these cultural differences. We all come from different backgrounds, and I think the best thing we can do is be patient, understand each other, and respect each other’s cultures. ❤️

It's actually quite uncommon to order by saying "Can I have..." and English is an anomaly in this instance. In French you'd say "I'm going to take ...", in Arabic you'd also say "I want..." and in Korean you would simply say "Give me..." 😂
