teacher here! this is a key tenet of teaching, students will rise/fall to the level of expectations they perceive you have for them. we have to be careful not to give off the idea that we don't believe in them

Ive reflected on this as an adult, I was the “dumb” one so I embraced it and made it a joke. I see so many kids and even grown adults still do this. Reality is I left to go to college found a new identity and was extremely successful. Friends play a large role in this but certainly as a parent you set this up the best you can.

you tell a kid s/he's smart, they'll grow up believing it until reality slaps them in the face that theyre just average

Whenever a kid acts out , i tell them that the behavior they just showed isn’t kind. And that i’m confused bc they are such sweet children. They ALWAYS behave better after that

it's true. a clown once complimented me on my patience waiting for a balloon animal and gave me a little kaleidoscope toy and I made that my entire personality.

Dont tell a kid hes smart. Theres a large chance he might take it as him not needing to study to understand things already. Tell him hes a hard worker.

It’s true tho, I had a kid in elementary that was having behavioral issues (due to family life) and I would just tell her all good things about her. Eventually she started being super sweet towards me and started doing better around other kids. Still sad she moved away right after she was doing so well.
