Apple User786295770 :
@Apple User786295770: As chair of a search committee I once received a letter from an applicant that started with the greeting “Dear Sir or Madam” so he’d already lost me right there. Hint: find out the name of the search committee chair and use it! Then the first line of his letter said “Put your feet up and relax, your search has come to an end! and then he proceeded to tell me how hiring him would be the wisest move we could make

And remember if you’re applying for a teaching intensive position (R2, liberal arts, etc) flip the teaching and research section AND always talk about working with undergrads in research.

OJ :
My program requires the course “the professoriate” where the objective is to teach all about the history of the professoriate, the structure of universities and colleges, the expectations of the professoriate, and how to prepare to apply. Its kind of a. Mini capstone but I thought it was the most helpful course and all the guest speakers brought so many good insights into the job, applying, financial structure, etc. I think it should be required for every PhD

Julia's Literary Lesbianism 📚 :
I was literally only explained this my most recent application by a professor who offered to look over mine incidentally. He gave me feedback and boom I got invited for an interview after i'd been rejected many times before. It's SO different it's crazy and so few people talk about it so great that you're talking about it!!

This is great advice but I’d offer one suggestion having served on a lot of search committees. I think the order of research/teaching is dependent on the type of university/position. When the university is teaching focused and you lead off with your research I start to question if you understand the institution and if you will be a good fit.

Thank you. I just started learning this lesson over the summer. I only knew about business cover letters: no more than a short couple of paragraphs. Now I know better and your explanation helps!
