Formed thousands of years ago by sediments from the Mississippi River, this barrier island has long served as a natural shield between the Gulf of America and the fragile marshes of Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes, helping protect the communities we call home. While Timbalier Island never had a permanent town, it was once home to the keepers of the Timbalier Bay Lighthouse, built in 1857. Their lives were marked by isolation and danger, and during the devastating hurricane of 1867, the original lighthouse was destroyed. The keepers survived by clinging to an iron buoy until they were rescued days later. Today, the island is only a fraction of its former size. Decades of erosion, hurricanes, land subsidence, and rising sea levels continue to reshape this beautiful but fragile coastline.
