@shawneekish: An Indigenous person enjoying country music at the Calgary Stampede states they were pushed and then told: “I fng buried your ancestors under our fng schools and pissed on their graves.” That is not “just words.” It is a violent act of racism rooted in a history Canada still has not fully reckoned with. This person felt bold and brave enough to say this out loud in a public space. That should tell us how far we still have to go. Racism against Indigenous people is not history. It is here. It is present. And it is dangerous. Being Indigenous in Canada is an act of resistance. Hate toward Indigenous people is an act of fear. Still, despite this inflicted and perpetuated harm, we rise in every space across this country and land with our story’s, our voices. To this young man that experienced this harm and in this space of country music I know and love so much. I am deeply sorry, this is a space that should have been safe for you. We have to do better here.
