Omg I love this one too. When I was a kid I always thought “what if my life is a dream and j wake up as an elephant” I was so relieved to find I wasn’t the only one with this line of thinking

I have experienced a dream before for sure, and while I was in it I had no idea I was in a dream, but once it was over I knew it was a dream. So, I have built an understanding of what a dream looks like, and my current present state does not appear to look like a dream. I cannot say definitively, but I can suggest that I am not currently in a dream.

if i one day wake up and realise my whole life has been a dream then whatever i wake up into wouldn’t be reality, ‘reality’ is only a description of the predicates of how i exist. like how we distinguish dreams from reality despite still existing in both because they are more abstract etc, if i woke up from reality i would be able to distinguish the predicates of that existence into something other than reality. words only have meaning within the sphere of how they exist, i think people treat descriptions of existence like ‘reality’ as far more concrete things than they are

wouldnt the existence of knowledge past a persons understanding disprove this. For example there are rules and concepts in post graduate mathematics that I currently cannot fathom but if I take the time to learn them those concepts and rules will stand. We cannot create a system that advanced in a dream state especially if we do not currently understand it if you get what I mean

What about the idea of consistency in ‘reality’. You could take the laws of nature for example. Drop a glass today, it will fall. Drop a glass 2000 years ago, it will still fall. People we talk to will remember the conversations we had 10 years ago. In contrast, dreams don’t have this level of deep consistency. You could drop a glass and it could burst into skittles. This is just my understanding

This is anecdotal but when I dream I don't have introspection or the ability to really "think" in general, I just passively experience auditory and visual stimuli. When I'm awake, like now, I have introspective ability, as I do while writing this comment.

tbis is interesting, whats the distinction between dream and waking life in this argument, is it that in waking life others are concious ? I know it sounds like a silly question but if theres no true distinction surely dreams and waking life are just two non categorically different modes of experience just one has a heightened sensory experience

and yes because that’s why they say our unconscious is a sponge. we know (or think) we are awake. our unconscious can’t decipher btween the two. therefore if we are dreaming rn. we can alter the dream. change our current reality. it’s all possible through manifestation and mind power

Isn’t this existentialism but on an individual scale? Trying to question your existence in the world which, if the argument stands, means that even everything we know could all be fake. Funny thing is that I do think about this everyday and it’s accentuated when I think back to funny or unprecedented moments and think “there is no why this just happened”😅

I have lucid dreams so I do know 😭 sensations are not nearly as realistic as in real life. speech is random and scenes change so quickly. unfortunately I cannot teleport in real life so its quite clear when im awake 😫
