Light skin Indians get treated better but you are all Indians. If you have the Arab phenotype you will get categorized as that and if you are Afghani you will be treated as exotic if you look Central Asian and if you are NE Indian you will be seen as Chinese.

My husband is from Nepal, but he is of North Indian descent, he never gets mistaken for South Asian or Indian in our area, for some reason people come up and start speaking Spanish and think he is Mexican. Same with our kids, people are surprised when the kids correct them and say they are Nepali or South Asian. Then the person will say I thought you were Mexican, you don’t look Asian.

idk what to say. like duh the ethnicity is not actually different within the region, ig colonial propaganda and fresh lines drawn on a map has fooled ppl ? yes there’s ethnic variation, but Bengalis are still Bengalis in West Bengal AND Bangladesh .. whether or not they’re Hindu or Muslim … even when Bangladesh was still East Bengal and then East Pakistan…the ethnicity didn’t change. does this need to be explained actually ? whew
