As most of you know, Tommy was diagnosed with priapism, a condition in which the penis maintains prolonged blood flow and swelling. This can happen due to trauma (such as a kick or even a bee sting), medication, internal issues, and other causes. We still have no idea what triggered it in Tommy’s case. Our veterinarian made numerous attempts to reduce the swelling and return everything to normal, but nothing worked, which is why Tommy had to be rushed to the hospital. Once there, the doctor drained the trapped blood and hoped that, along with medication, it would resolve on its own. Sadly, it didn’t, and Tommy needed a partial phallectomy to save his life and allow him to live comfortably. I was terrified for him. Tommy is an old gentleman living with Cushing’s disease, arthritis, blindness, and a permanent head tilt. Without surgery, he could have faced necrosis, severe urine scalding, worsening swelling, sepsis, and unimaginable pain. Thankfully, Tommy came through surgery like the true champion he is. He woke up in his hospital stall as if he hadn’t just undergone such an invasive procedure, amazing everyone caring for him. Tommy has now been home from the hospital for six days! We’ve been staying in close contact with his surgeon and following his aftercare routine carefully, which is so important for a successful recovery. Every day he grows a little stronger, and we couldn’t be prouder of him. Someone recently told us that Tommy looks like the cutest cartoon horse they’ve ever seen… and now we can’t unsee it. 🥹❤️ Thank you all for the love, prayers, encouragement, and support you’ve shown this incredible boy.
