A normal pencil sharpener has one hole. This one has two. KITA-BOSHI, one of the last family-run pencil factories in Tokyo, looked into why their pencils kept breaking and found it wasn't the pencils, it was the sharpeners. A conventional sharpener has one blade doing two jobs at once, shaving the wood and pointing the lead in the same motion. As the point forms, the tip gets pinched at the narrow end and becomes a pivot, so every small wobble of your hand gets amplified down at the point, where the lead is thin and barely wrapped in wood. So it snaps just under the surface where you can't see it. The pencil looks fine but won't write, you sharpen again, it snaps again, and you blame the pencil. The 634 Sharpener splits the job in two. Hole 1 only shaves the wood, leaving a thin wooden shaft with blunt lead. Hole 2 only points the lead, with no wood left to fight. Each hole does half the work, so you barely push, and by the second stage your fingers sit close to the tip with almost no leverage left. Less force, less wobble, no snap.
