There’s a street in Lower Manhattan most New Yorkers walk right past Maiden Lane. Dutch settlers laid it in 1698 and called it Maagde Paatje, “maiden path,” because mothers and daughters used the brook alongside it to do laundry. By 1795, diamond merchants took over. Brides wanted their ring to come from Maiden Lane. In 1900, a ten-story tower went up at 14 Maiden Lane, built specifically for the diamond trade. einforced floors for vaults, oversized windows for grading stones.
