This girl was waiting for the end of her life, until an experimental treatment called insulin changed everything. 😢 Before this discovery, a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis was essentially a death sentence, and the only available "treatment" was an extreme starvation diet, sometimes as low as a few hundred calories a day, that kept patients alive slightly longer but left them dangerously thin and weak. The "before" photo reflects exactly that: a child in critical condition, her body breaking down from the disease. This breakthrough happened at the University of Toronto, where Frederick Banting and Charles Best developed insulin and began treating some of the first patients in 1922. One of the most famous cases from that same era was Elizabeth Hughes, who arrived in Toronto weighing just 45 pounds and unable to walk on her own. Within weeks of starting insulin, she was gaining weight rapidly and living on a full, healthy diet again, going on to live a long, ordinary life afterward. What makes this discovery even more remarkable: Banting, Best, and their colleague Collip sold the insulin patent to the University of Toronto for just $1 each, believing something this life-saving shouldn't be controlled or profited from by any one person.
