My dad died within 12 months of being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The number of people that said “At least you got to say goodbye”… like no I did not?! His death was still unexpected, he wasn’t in hospice, even the doctors were shocked. But like saying goodbye makes it easier to lose your dad! Oh and I was pregnant when he died, the number of people that told me it was the perfect time to be pregnant…tf?! I spent my pregnancy in deep grief crying every day, didn’t celebrate it or have a baby shower. People don’t understand which I suppose is a good thing.

I think the main thing is that if people have never lost someone at the same level as your grief, they don’t know how to show up for you.

I had a friend that MAJORLY did not show up for me when my dad died and suddenly years later when her mom died she had this revelation and was so sorry she didn’t do right by me, it’s like how do you explain to people that you should have default empathy and not have to experience it yourself to idk, even just like show up at the funeral to support me or be there for me

And people not realizing grief never ends. Yes I’m still sad my loved ones have passed and yes I will mourn all of them at once if I start to miss one of them. Birthdays, death days, holidays, personal milestones I can’t share. The grief in those situations sneak up even decades after.
