I respectfully disagree. Whether culinary school is necessary really comes down to your long-term career goals—and how you plan to sustain your career as you get older in an industry that often favors younger, more physically resilient workers. If your goal is to become an executive chef, experience, hard work, and talent can absolutely get you there. But if your ambition is to become a corporate chef, oversee multiple locations, work in research and development, or move into executive leadership, you’ll likely be competing against candidates who have both extensive experience and formal culinary education. Culinary school isn’t the only path to success, and many outstanding chefs have never attended. But saying “no” across the board overlooks the advantages it can provide. For some career paths, it can be the credential that helps open the next door.

In my country we ain't getting a stable job without a degree, and yes even cooks need a degree if not, then it's hard to find some job offers, soo I'm going to culinary school

I’ve been in the fine dining restaurant industry for over 20 years. From East Coast to West Coast. If you come into the kitchen and you have gone to culinary school, whether it’s to your face or not you will be laughed at. Screw culinary school just jump right on into a restaurant and work your way up. You’ll get more respect and experience his triumphs any school you can go to. Trust me.

Chef for 4 decades, no culinary school. Yes, if you can afford it you should go to culinary school while holding a kitchen job at least part time. The world is different now, that degree will open up opportunities you’ll never see without it. However, I would advise becoming an accountant instead. This business is exploitive as fuck.

Kitchen work is a profession; kitchen staff need professional training. That's why culinary schools exist. Even if chefs and cooks don't attend one, they learn through practice and experience and gain all the necessary knowledge from culinary professionals. That's why they deserve better wages and tips.

the problem with culinary school is most the ppl that go there have no experience, so when they finally do get into a restaurant they arent prepared for how hard the job is and they quit. a lot of chefs dont think much about culinary students because their success rate is really low and they have a bigger ego than they should. but in short, no culinary school isnt necessary. working your way up and moving on to a better restaurant is a better path

do both. Chef for over 40 years here. Didn't go to school, but trained with 2 master chefs. That being said, looking back, go to school if you can.

It really depends on where you are. Don't take culinary school if you're in a city where there are a lot of restaurants because experience over a degree, even if you got a low position you will get promoted eventually. But if you are in a place where there's no known food chain or restaurant better to take culinary school to learn basics.
