A menstrual cycle isn’t an excuse to intentionally mistreat people, but it’s also not something that can be dismissed as “just a period.” It’s a biological process involving hormonal fluctuations that can affect pain levels, energy, mood, sleep, appetite, concentration, and emotional regulation. Some women experience mild symptoms, while others deal with debilitating cramps, migraines, nausea, fatigue, or conditions like endometriosis or PMDD that can significantly disrupt daily life. Pretending all women experience it the same way ignores reality.
The better question isn’t, “Is a period an excuse?” It’s, “How do we respond to each other with understanding and accountability?” A woman can say, “I’m having a rough day because my cycle is hitting me hard,” while still taking responsibility if she snaps at someone. Likewise, a partner can recognize she’s dealing with something physically and hormonally demanding without minimizing it or taking every emotional moment personally. Compassion and accountability aren’t opposites: they’re meant to exist together.
One thing I think men should remember is that this isn’t a choice. It’s a recurring biological function that most women experience for decades of their lives. You don’t have to fully understand what it feels like to acknowledge that it’s real. Sometimes, the most supportive response isn’t trying to fix it; it’s asking, “What do you need from me today?” That question alone can change the entire interaction.
