I’m auDHD and I was like “I learned to braid hair before I learned to tie my shoes and tying my shoes was a breeze! I don’t think this applies to me!” And then I looked up examples of dyspraxia handwriting and …. Idk maybe it does apply to me 🤣

Interesting!! I was diagnosed at 16 after yearly assessments due to being "off or something just not quite right." Every assessment I tried very hard to pretend to be someone else, since I had always gotten in trouble for being myself. I was so upset to be diagnosed then, but I am relieved to know now and help understand myself and become a happier person. I couldn't tie my shoes until mid 2nd grade/7 years old and had to be shown from my perspective. Not sure why my parents made me wear shoes with laces when slip ons or velcro shoes would have been way better. I think they wanted "to teach me a lesson." I fell all the time because my shoes were untied or I tucked the laces in to hide it and not be yelled at by the teacher. I was also quite behind learning to write. Never did understand any gym games. Struggled in science class or art if I was not watching behind the teacher seeing things from my perspective. I can't reorient things to my perspective, so driving is extremely different for me coming and going from places or taking a different route. I seem lost in space and disoriented with physical directions and moving myself in steps to do what comes naturally for others.

Psst… autism experts are high masking undiagnosed autistics themselfs 🙃 please don’t tell your mom though, because despite her being an expert and she thinks she understands it all, what’s keeping her from seeing it in you and in herself is her ableism.

Oldest daughter-diagnosed autistic, highly gifted in math and language arts, tied her shoes and potty trained slightly late, taught herself cursive handwriting in elementary school and developed sensory issues as she got older. Middle child-didn’t meet diagnostic criteria, had sensory when he was young but grew out of it, didn’t tie his shoes until high school, potty trained pretty late, academically average, terrible handwriting. Third child-diagnosed autistic. Almost in high school, still can’t tie his shoes, potty trained very late, sensory issues since elementary, highly gifted, terrible handwriting.

I never learned how to tie my shoes the way you're supposed to. I invented a way to tie my shoes at 5, it worked, I passed on to my brother who also couldn't learn "the" correct way but he did learn mine. At 9 I started to do calligraphy on my own, just because my handwriting was SO AWFUL. and yeah, I'm 36, AuDHD and so many other things too 😂

I learned to read CHAPTER BOOKS before I could tie my shoes lol. And I learned at 5 how to tie my shoes finally 🤣

My mam was an intellectual disability nurse before I was born, so when I was 14 and I told her "I think I might be autistic, can I get tested?" She told me "I worked with children who couldn't even TALK or READ bc they were so disabled!... You're ✨too smart✨ to be autistic!!!!!!" .,.,... anyway 4yrs later I was diagnosed with autism, and at 23 have been told by my team I also have other neurodivergence's( hyperlexia and high sensitivity) ! So please trust your gut ALWAYS when it comes to your own mind- also remember her training/ practice may be very outdated!

My Mom was a teach with specialized training for autism. She missed it too but still managed to create a bunch of accommodations for me at home 🫠

my MIL is a pyschiatrist and I had to be the one to tell my husband at 25 that he has ADHD and needed to go get tested and medicated.

I still do the simple bunny ears. My brain cannot fathom how people take both laces and wrap them around each other the other way, the way most adults do it. I’m 34😭🤣

Your mom being an autism expert yet you potentially going Undiagnosed with it speaks volumes about how overlooked we as women can be with having this. It's such a broad spectrum with so many variations that we can often go our entire lives without knowing. If it wasn't for people speaking about this on TT,I would have no idea that I have it. My daughter has autism and I've known for years, yet it took me 36 years to realize it came from me.
