@seleniumed: In 1865 James Clerk Maxwell wrote down four equations that unified electricity and magnetism into a single theory - and accidentally predicted the existence of light. It is one of the greatest intellectual achievements in the history of physics. Before Maxwell, electricity and magnetism were studied as separate forces. Faraday had shown that changing magnetic fields create electric fields, and Ampere had linked electric currents to magnetic fields. Maxwell took these experimental results, wrote them as mathematical laws, and noticed something was missing. When he added a correction term to Ampere's law - a term representing a changing electric field acting like a current - his equations predicted something extraordinary. Disturbances in electric and magnetic fields should propagate through space as waves, travelling at a speed determined by two measurable constants. That speed turned out to be exactly the speed of light. Light itself is an electromagnetic wave. Radio waves, microwaves, X-rays, and gamma rays are all the same phenomenon at different frequencies. Maxwell's equations describe all of them with four compact relations covering how electric and magnetic fields are generated by charges and currents, and how they induce each other. Every modern technology involving wireless signals, from phones to satellites to medical imaging, is built on what Maxwell discovered.
