something interesting about tardigrades as well is that iirc their proteins are found to be stable and functional at a really huge range of temperatures. most proteins unfold (most proteins are almost like yarn tangled into specific shapes that must interlock to work and send biological signals) and they only hold these very specific shapes at certain temperatures where they are "stable", and tardigrade proteins have larger stable temp ranges and also iirc a large proportion of them are non-globular (aka, not like balls of yarn but closer to more loosely tangled strings of yarn) and are somehow able to function this way. i did a lab course where we ran tests on protein stability using a SINGLE protein whose mutations cause developmental disorders in humans and the different mutant versions of this protein (RARS1 for anyone curious) being less stable at temperatures differing from 1-2 degrees or even less can cause pronounced disability so its so insane to think that this creatures' entire molecular biology is so resilient

idk why I always have nightmares about tardigrades on me. I wake up in disgust. One night I actually even had a nightmare of tardigrades and this one little boy coincidentally came up to make later that day and told me random facts about tardigrades. I knew the devil was definitely busy that day.
