@nbcsandiego: Costco in San Diego’s Morena District is now 50 years old. Sol Price opened the first wholesale club as Price Club in 1976. It became one of the first Costcos in the United States in 1983. San Diego State graduate Jim Sinegal and his partner Jeffrey Brotman opened the first official Costco in Seattle earlier that year. However, the current building on Morena Boulevard goes all the way back to World War II.

Some of the information being shared is a little off. The story actually begins with FedMart, which was founded in 1954 in San Diego by Sol Price. After Sol Price left FedMart in 1975, he founded Price Club, opening the very first warehouse club on July 12, 1976, on Morena Boulevard in San Diego in a former Howard Hughes aircraft hangar. That location is still a Costco today. Costco was founded later, in 1983, with its first warehouse opening in Seattle. As Costco expanded into San Diego—including Kearny Mesa—it became a direct competitor to Price Club. In 1993, the two companies merged and the new company was officially named PriceCostco. It operated under that name for several years before shareholders approved simplifying the corporate name. In 1997, the company became Costco Companies, Inc., and later Costco Wholesale Corporation, while the warehouse locations were rebranded simply as Costco. So the timeline is: * 1954 – Sol Price founds FedMart in San Diego. * 1976 – Sol Price opens the first Price Club in San Diego. * 1983 – Costco is founded in Seattle. * 1993 – Price Club and Costco merge to form PriceCostco. * 1997 – The company is renamed simply Costco, the name we know today.
