@redditstories_doggo: Our daughter was so excited to show her dad a picture of her holding a snake with a park ranger, but when he saw it he turned it into a lecture about how unsafe she was being, and now I'm pissed that he ruined that memory for her. Plus one update. Posted by: u/Murky-Suggestion-628 #reddit #redditstories #redditreadings #storytime #minecraftparkour #redditdoggo

To all parents: it's incredibly exhausting and draining when you think all opportunities are teaching moments. My dad is like this, and 9 times out of 10, he will point out things I should be more careful about, things I can improve, etc. It's understandable where you're coming from, but this kind of constant behavior makes your kids afraid of the world, anxious, and unconfident. Sure, take care of your kids, but don't project your fears and traumas onto them, and let them learn through their own mistakes as well, while actively praising their successes.

....was she holding a KING COBRA?? A GABOON VIPERA?? I doubt it 😅 it was probably a python. Either ball or young Burmese at most 🤔 I'm terrified of most snakes, but I wouldn't be freaked out if my kid was holding one 😅 maybe a full size Burmese, reticulated or anaconda at her age and size I'd be iffy about 😅 but smaller ones?? nah. I told her just cause I'm afraid doesnt mean she has to be

Park rangers 10/10 are trained to handle animals and wouldn’t give out animals that are dangerous. snakes aren’t going to attack you randomly and they wouldn’t give out dangerous snakes.

If it was a wild snake they found on a trail, I’d understand where the dad is coming from but they were in the safest place they could’ve been. Dad is just being super overprotective

sounds exactly how my mom reacted when I showed her how proud I was for a boy biting me and I didn't cry (I was like 1st grade and bullied a lot) as an adult, I realize my mom's overreaction was right to take this all the way to the principal... but as a child I was so embarrassed and felt JUST as scolded as my bully. it does matter

I feel like a proper middle ground for dad is supporting daughter then teaching her how to spot venomous snakes in a neutral way

I had to do community service at a children museum as a kid and only played with the snakes and animals the whole time

I'd somewhat understand the reaction when it was a wild snake picked up somewhere outside. But it wasn't. It wasn't. It was a well regulated educational space with trained adults and emergency protocols and I highly doubt the snake was venomous. I get the fear of a parent but all this will accomplish if this keeps happening is the kid becoming anxious and scared of literally everything and more so showing her dad stuff she did because he might react like that more often than once. Good on OP for putting her foot down and making it clear therapy and him working on his issues before they turn into issues of their daughter is non negotiable

So is everything she does will be a problem of “ too dangerous “ at one point she’s going to grow up and go off on her own what happens then like getting into a competive sport is he going to say that’s dangerous she can’t do that what will he’s reaction be to he’s daughter getting a license “ can’t drive cuz that’s dangerous “ or what if your daughter wants to be a cop or in the army “ can’t do that that’s dangerous “ how does he think kids learn they learn by falling making mistakes that’s how they get better how does he think a child learns how to ride a bike
