Battle for Wesnoth is such a gem. This game is over two decades old and still gets updates occasionally. The campaigns have really interesting story telling and can be quite challenging. The game contains many scenarios that can be played solo, with your friends or with strangers online and the option to create your own maps and scenarios. You can choose to play a variety of factions (Humans, Orcs, elves, undead. etc), each with completely individual units with their own strengths and weaknesses. The game mechanics are easy enough to understand but provide enough depth for the player to have to think strategically. The graphics are kept simple but still are quite charming. It has huge modding support and an active modding community providing a lot of high quality extras like new campaigns and scenarios (some introducing even new game mechanics), new factions and units, maps, etc. Definitely a game worth checking out

Shout out to OpenXCOM. While you need the graphical and audio assets from the original proprietary game, the open source reimplementation of the engine is very light
