You have to prove you’re near or below the poverty line, pass an asset test, meet work requirements, and re-certify every few months. Benefits are spent on an EBT card at approved retailers only, tracked by data analysis and undercover investigations. The retailer trafficking rate? About 1.6%. Now the payoff: one study found every $1 spent on a child’s food assistance returns about $62 over their lifetime — through healthier births, more kids finishing school, higher adult earnings, and lower rates of heart disease and diabetes decades later. Cheap for us. Life-changing for them. So why are we gutting it? Since the “Big Beautiful Bill” passed in July 2025, an estimated 808,000 children have already been dropped from SNAP in just 13 states. And the biggest cuts haven’t even started — by 2034 it’s the largest food-assistance cut in U.S. history, roughly $186 billion. We’re cutting kids’ food to save pennies. They don’t get a vote. We do.
