Your boss asks you to email a client, and you say, yes, of course. But then they say, 'Oh, there'll be a spreadsheet to attach as well, And oh, there'll be a follow-up meeting if you can make that. And, oh, can you also email this client as well?' This is an example of the ‘foot-in-the-door’ tactic and it's a good way to introduce the Sorites paradox. The Sorites paradox says that no one small incremental change can justify a new vague descriptor. For example, if you pluck one hair from my head, I would still have a full head of hair. Likewise, if you did it again. And so how many hairs would you need to pluck before you could call me bald? Likewise with our creeping boss. If somebody asks you to do a small thing, it seems obvious and simple to say yes. But then they add another small thing, and another small thing, and before long a small job ends up being quite a big one. This is seen everywhere. It's seen in small things, as when your dad asks you to get some milk from the shop, but then sends you a massive shopping list when you are there. But it's in bigger things, as when a casual relationship leads to meeting the parents, leads to getting a house, and getting a dog. The foot-in-the-door tactic works by asking us to focus on the one small thing in front of us, but the solution is to make sure that we have lines that we are unwilling to cross. We need to decide how much is too much and when enough is enough. When does one small job become something that we are unwilling and unable to carry?
