Kate Bush was born in Bexleyheath, southeast London in 1958. In January 1978 her debut single Wuthering Heights, released when she was 19, went to number one. It was the first self-written number one by a female British artist. She would go on to write and record ten studio albums, direct her own music videos, refuse to tour for thirty-five years, and in 2022 quietly become the first artist ever to have a UK number one in five different decades. This is Kate in a British TV interview from late 1979. She has just turned twenty-one. She has released two albums. She is being asked, in the manner of the time, how she is going to follow the success. She has already thought about it. It is not a matter of following. Things have happened. You have done them. You see things wrong in them. You want to go on and do them right. It is just the desire to keep doing things better. She is asked if she might change her style. She would quite like to. Change is important, on any level. She wants to change, not only as a person but as a musician. She is asked who she first plays a new song to. It used to be her father. Now it is her engineer John Kelly, or one of her brothers, or her father still, now and again. It has to be someone whose judgement she trusts. Because you have to believe in yourself. Otherwise you become them and not yourself. She is asked if her confidence ever goes. It goes, she says. It goes a lot. She sits there and thinks, where's my purpose? I'm nothing. And then something will make her see that she is just a tiny little thing just trying to do her best. Finally, she is asked what Kate Bush will be like at 31. Probably a few more lines.
