if the government goes after an individual for miss information, if you interpreted a news story differently, the court case would allow you to argue your point of view, attorneys often do not present facts, the present points of view one side VS another, it's up to the attorneys to put together a stronger argument to their point of view. also if the government takes some one to court for misinformation the defendant can petition the government for discovery so you can review all records related to the situation you have be allegedly spread misinformation. since the individual is guaranteed a fair trial and the government says their statement is false they can be compelled to provide all their records related to that statements subject matter to prove whether such a statement is incorrect or their own assessment was incorrect. a simple statement by a third does not make it so. also should contrary information be found the politician in question can required deposed under under oath as well. if they try to take you to court.
