Choosing between definite and indefinite articles in French is all about precision and how specific the object is in your mind. Think of it as a camera focus: Indefinite Articles (un, une, des) = Wide & Blurry Focus. You use them for non-specific, random items, or when introducing something for the first time (e.g., J'ai acheté un livre - I bought a random book). Definite Articles (le, la, l', les) = Macro Zoom & Sharp Focus. You use them for specific, unique, or previously mentioned items where both speakers know exactly what is being discussed (e.g., C'est le livre de Marie - It is specifically Marie's book). The Major Exception: Verbs of preference (aimer, adorer, détester, préférer). In English, you drop the article for general plural statements ("I like cheese"). In French, expressing a general like or dislike requires a sharp focus on the entire category, meaning you must use a definite article (e.g., J'aime le fromage, Je déteste les chiens).
