@annekasvenskaofficial: 🩸 This video went viral… but many people missed what was really happening. When my wolfdog River caught a wild rabbit, thousands expected me to simply walk over and take it from him. That would have been a huge mistake. River wasn’t being naughty, stubborn or trying to dominate me. He was protecting an incredibly valuable food resource, exactly as millions of years of wolf evolution have shaped him to do. For a wild wolf, giving up food could mean starvation. Those survival instincts still run deep in many wolfdogs. Domestic dogs are different. Over around 30,000 years, humans selectively bred them to be more cooperative, more compliant and more willing to share resources with us. That’s why what works for many pet dogs doesn’t always work for a wolfdog. Instead of creating conflict, I offered River something even more valuable: a giant marrow bone. He chose to make the trade. No confrontation. No broken trust. A much lower risk of a defensive bite. Understanding instinct is far more effective than fighting against it. 🎥 If you’d like to learn how and why trading works with wolfdogs, my full 10-minute YouTube video is now live on Animal Watch. 👇 Have you ever had to trade with your dog instead of simply taking something away? #wolf #wolfdog #resourceguarding #dogbehaviour #dogfacts

That is such valuable information. Keeping the trust in tact with your animals is so important and to avoid the conflict means so much. People view it as weak I view it as living with very powerful animals responsibly!

It’s part of his genetic makeup. Just be careful with him catching rabbits. Years ago my cat brought in a rabbit he had caught. The rabbit was dying of myxomatosis. My cat then got very sick, he went blind in both eyes and his kidneys were damaged. He survived but was never back to full health.

My Caucasian shepherd is the same. They are a different kind of dog. So I completely get it 100%. I do the same with my boy. Rabbits are high value. 🥰
