A jury today rejected a wrongful death lawsuit against a Los Angeles police officer who fired three rounds at an assailant in a clothing store and a ricocheting bullet killed a teen girl hiding in a fitting room. Nine of 12 jurors agreed Officer William Dorsey Jones Jr. wasn't negligent when he fired his AR-15 inside Burlington Coat Factory in North Hollywood on Dec. 23, 2021, killing a man who assaulted a woman with a large bicycle lock and also killing 14-year-old Valentina Orellana-Peralta, who was hiding in a fitting room with her mother. She was at the store looking for dresses for her quincenera. Jones testified he mistakenly believed the man had a gun and had shot his victim in her head. Video from body-worn cameras shows Jones and five other officers charging through the store in a diamond formation when Jones, who had recently been trained on active shooters, runs to the front and other officers yell at him to slow down. The senior officer, Michael Mazur, testified he believed Jones didn't obey him at the time but realized he actually did after reviewing the footage. Jurors heard closing arguments on Wednesday. The clerk published the verdict this morning (Thursday, May 7) about 10:15 a.m. PST in Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Frank M. Tavelman's courtroom in Burbank. #law #crime #court
