1. Use 2 instruments to scale. My go-to scalers/curettes are the Montana Jack and a Universal Curette. The less instruments you use to scale, the less time you waste going through/picking up and putting down all the area-specific curettes and scalers. 2. Explore with your scalers/curettes I go subgingival with my scalers with exploratory strokes and when I feel calculus, I apply debridement strokes, remove the calculus, check the face of the instrument to see if there are any deposits present, then keep moving if there isn't any. 3. Know your doctor Have EVERYTHING ready for the doctor to do the exam. Have radiographs easily viewable. Mirror and explorer clear on the tray. Look for caries/lesions before doctor comes in. Write down chief complaints. Present it all to the doctor when he/she comes in, so they can be in and out, 4. Polish First Air polish, prophy cup/paste, whatever. Get the plaque off the teeth first, then cavitron, and when you hand scale, you're getting calc off only and not focusing on plaque at all (for the most part). You'll flow quicker. 5. Pre-write notes during treatment Just put down phrases like, "showed flossing, gave sensodyne, brush well on #15 lingual" when you start a note mid treatment. Then go back during down time/end of the day and finish them up quickly. 6. Set up an armamentarium beforehand. Have your saliva ejectors, air water syringes, cassettes, etc bundled up all in one so that your set up is a lot quicker after patients. 7. Review your patients' charts beforehand Know who's coming in, what kind of patient you will be dealing with, what kind of mouth you will be cleaning, what procedure you will be doing, and at what time. You'll get a better idea of how the day can go and mentally prepare for mishaps that may happen. What efficiency tip would you add for new hygienists? Let me know in the comments my fellow hygienists! #dental #dentalhygiene #dentalhygienegrads #dentistry
