Does coffee cause dry eyes… or have we been blaming the wrong thing? 👀☕️ If you have dry eyes, chances are someone has told you: “Maybe you should stop drinking coffee.” 🚫 But is your morning coffee really the reason your eyes feel dry? A large study of 85,302 adults looked at the connection between caffeine and dry eye disease. Researchers considered factors like age, medications, health conditions, stress, sleep, smoking, and alcohol intake. The surprising finding? 👀 Caffeine was not linked to a higher risk of dry eye disease. So if you love your daily coffee, you probably don’t need to panic and pour it down the sink. ☕👍 Even more interesting? Some smaller clinical studies have shown that caffeine can temporarily increase tear production in certain people. Now, does this mean coffee is a dry eye treatment?👀 Nope. Coffee won’t fix dry eye symptoms like burning, irritation, gritty eyes, redness, or blurry vision. Dry eyes are often linked to things like: 👁️ Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) 👁️ Blepharitis (eyelid inflammation) 👁️ Reduced tear production 👁️ Too much screen time and not enough blinking 👁️ Your environment So the next time someone tells you to give up coffee for your dry eyes… know that your coffee might not actually be the reason why. #dryeyes #optometrist #coffee #eyedoctor #dryeyespecialist Reference: Vehof J, et al. The Relationship Between Caffeine Intake and Dry Eye Disease. Cornea. 2023;42(2):143–150. DOI: 10.1097/ICO.0000000000002979.
