Riley was finally asleep. He was warm against me, completely peaceful. And I should have felt relieved. Instead, I remember looking around the room and feeling this overwhelming sense of loneliness. The whole house was quiet. Everyone else seemed to be asleep. And I was sitting there wide awake, exhausted, with a million thoughts running through my head. How many more times would he wake? Would tomorrow be another day where I felt like I was running on empty? Why did everyone else seem to cope so much better? Was I the only mum struggling this much? I think that’s the strange thing about motherhood. You can be holding the person you love more than anything in the world and still feel completely alone. Nobody tells you how isolating those tiny hours can be. The 2am feed. The 3am rocking. The 4am resettle. The moments where you’re desperate for sleep but also don’t want to put your baby down because they’re finally peaceful in your arms. And then I saw the lights. Other mums awake. All over the world. Different houses. Different babies. Different reasons for being awake. But there they were. And something in me softened. Because suddenly I wasn’t the only light on. Sometimes we don’t need someone to fix motherhood for us. We don’t need another sleep schedule. We don’t need another list of things we should be doing differently. Sometimes we just need to know someone else is awake too. Someone else is feeding. Someone else is rocking. Someone else is staring at the clock and wondering when morning will come. Someone else understands. And sometimes a little message from another mum, a hug from someone you’ve never met, or simply seeing those little lights is enough to make the night feel less lonely. Motherhood can be incredibly lonely. But I’ve learned that lonely doesn’t always mean alone. There are mums everywhere doing exactly what we’re doing. Loving their babies. Getting through the hard nights. Taking it one wake up at a time. So if you’re holding a sleeping baby in a dark room tonight, I hope you remember this. Look for the other lights. You’re not the only one awake. 💛 #newmom #momlife #postpartum #motherhood #momcommunity
