@chemistry_icon: 💗⚡ Electricity makes chemistry visible! In this experiment, salt (NaCl) increases the electrical conductivity of water, allowing current to flow through the solution. The graphite electrodes act as the cathode (−) and anode (+), where electrochemical reactions take place. At the cathode, water is reduced, producing hydrogen gas (H₂) and hydroxide ions (OH⁻). As the pH rises, phenolphthalein turns a brilliant pink, revealing the formation of a basic solution. At the anode, water—or chloride ions at higher salt concentrations—is oxidized, producing oxygen or small amounts of chlorine, depending on the conditions.
