In my mind the purpose of debate is almost never to change the mind of the person I'm arguing with. it's to make sure my arguments are out there in the public consciousness so that when another person whose mind isn't made up sees the opposing argument, they'll also have my counter argument against it right there too.

i remember this clicking for me when i snapped out of my brain fog haze and remembered what my very feminist and socially aware and accepting debate teacher said before a mock debate: "Remember, this is not a conversation, no matter how much you disagree with what is on your assignment's agenda, you must argue that you are right."

EXACTLY IVE BEEN SAYING THIS!!!!! why do you guys think those alt-right debate youtube videos ALWAYS have titles like "blue haired feminists gets DESTROYED in heated debate" or shit like that and have thumbnails that always focus on the woman yelling/having an aggravated expression. its made for men who use it as a rush the same way they use pornography as a rush to demean and belittle women.
