On June 24th of 1916, Mary Pickford became the first female film star to ever receive a million dollar contract. Mary was born under the name Gladys Marie Smith in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She began acting on stage in 1900, and started her film career in the US in 1909. After appearing in over 150 short films from 1909 to 1912, she started working for a studio that eventually became part of Paramount Pictures. By 1916 her popularity was such that she'd been awarded the contract that made her a PARTNER with Zukor, the studio head, which allowed her to produce her own films! It still wasn't enough though. The ambitious Mary Pickford paired up with DW Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, and Douglas Fairbanks in 1919 to creat United Artists - an organization designed to distribute their films. She even married Douglas Fairbanks a year later in 1920, retired from acting in 1933, remained a producer for a few years before retiring from that, and sold her stock in United Artists in 1956 for three million dollars. Mary Pickford, with the help of some smart real estate investments, was worth an estimated fifty million dollars upon her death in 1979. That 1916 contact happened on this day in history. #onthisdayinhistory #historybuff #historian #throwbackhistory #learnfromthepast #historyfacts #historicalevents #DidYouKnow #timetravel #learningisfun #historymystery #historydebate #historicaltheory #historical #askahistorian #historyuncovered #historymemes #historygram #History #throwback #historyrepeats #1940shistory #hiddenhistory #historychallenge #weremember #otd Don't forget to hit that share button and follow this page for more!
