WHAT I WROTE MY PERSONAL STATEMENT ABOUT AS SOMEONE WHO ACCOMPLISHED A LOT AND DOESN’T HAVE A SOB STORY: it wasn’t a resume. it wasn’t a brag sheet. it barely covered my main extracurricular activities. instead, my personal statement is a love letter to two things: my first love, mom, and my second love, writing. it is the very simple but meaningful story of how I found my voice as a writer, and what I wanted to do with my storytelling skills. it is about how my mom’s story inspired my own. it is about WHY i do what i do. when I wrote this essay, I wasn’t thinking, “oh it’s too ‘cliche’ re: immigrant tropes.” I wasn’t thinking, “this doesn’t center on one of my activities.” in fact, I wasn’t even considering it for my personal statement—I wrote it for funsies. it was my mom who suggested I use it for my personal statement. that suggestion changed my life, because this personal statement got me into every ivy league i applied to. it opened the door to my dream school, Yale. it allowed me to pursue a dual degree in Theater Studies and Ethnicity, Race and Migration, learning more about the craft I love so much, my purpose on earth. of course, there were other factors. i did have good grades, test scores, good teacher recs, and a host of extracurriculars. and who is to say whether or not being asian helped or hurt me? college admissions process is opaque. we’ll never know why we did or didn’t get in. but what I’m most proud of 17-year-old Cassandra is that she stayed true to herself in her essays and managed to articulate her passions and dreams in a raw way. want to know my stats? it’s on my youtube channel. Comment YOUTUBE! And ofc, if you want to read not only my personal statement, but every supplemental that got me into every school i applied to, comment ESSAY!
