I found my auntie’s work in a museum. UNCREDITED. I was walking through the Grammy Museum when I stopped in my tracks. On the wall was a photo of Stevie Wonder at the 1975 Grammy Awards, wearing the iconic patchwork denim tuxedo he wore the night he won four Grammys, including Album of the Year. That suit was designed by my auntie, EVE. But there was no plaque. No name. Nothing to tell you who created it. Just the work. Preserved in history while the creator faded from it. When she was younger, she designed for other Black icons too, including Anita Baker. Her hands helped shape culture, even when history chose not to remember her name. This Black History Month, this is my homage to the unknown creators.
