@threadofeverything: The capstone of the Luke 15 set. The sheep is the loud lost, the coin is the quiet lost, the younger son is the ashamed lost, the elder brother is the one who never left. Four kinds of lost, and you are probably more than one. But step back and they collapse into a single story. The oldest readers of Genesis noticed Eden is built like a sanctuary (a river, gold, a tree shaped like the temple lamp, angels at the east gate, God walking through it with the same word used later for the tabernacle), and Adam is put there to "serve and keep," the words for a priest. Eden was the first Holy of Holies, and we were exiled from it. The church read the prodigal this way for centuries: Ambrose said the son is Adam, and the best robe is the glory Adam lost, handed back. So the whole Bible becomes one motion, the Presence relocating closer and closer (tent, temple, the Word in flesh, the veil torn open on a Friday, every believer a walking temple, and finally the cube-city where there is no temple because God is the temple). The prodigal walking back into the father's house is humanity walking back into the Presence, and Augustine read the homecoming exactly there. That last weld (the house as the Presence) is mine, built on old pieces I'll stand behind.
