From an HR manager: don’t trust people, don’t over share, document everything. Your coworkers aren’t your friend unless you leave and keep in touch. HR isn’t anyone’s friend and can’t do anything without documentation. Be professional. Send emails summarizing all chats/meetings you have. Never apologize. You can own a mistake without apologizing.

listen, at my last job, I ALWAYS jumped to help, always saying yes, take on more work and it literally sent me into a mental health crisis. at this current job, I do what's expected of me, I say no, I don't take on other people's work and I'm significantly happier. it's so nice to just come in, do what needs to be done and leave

If you find yourself in a gossipy workplace - NEVER talk shite about people. On the other hand, ALWAYS talk shite about software, equipment, the drive to work, the printer, technology, etc. That way they think you're one of them, cause they still hear you betchin about stuff.

That document thing... holy CRAP it saved my ass more than once. Organize your email from day one. Each project gets its own folder, and sort at the end of the day. And TRACK YOUR TIME CHARGE, even if you're salaried.
