De acuerdo con el testimonio de la madre de la menor, el hombre fue interceptado alrededor de las 5:00 de la mañana, cuando se dirigía a dejar a su hija con ella antes de irse a trabajar. A las 5:40, la mamá recibió una llamada de la niña, quien llorando le dijo: “Mami, se llevaron a mi papá”. Cuando llegó al lugar, el padre ya no se encontraba ahí y la menor permanecía con varios agentes migratorios. Según la versión que los agentes dieron a la madre, el hombre intentó escapar corriendo, pero fue alcanzado y detenido poco después. La niña relató que, al notar que su padre estaba asustado, primero intentó tranquilizarlo diciéndole: “Está bien, papi, solo es la policía”. Sin embargo, cuando se dio cuenta de que se trataba de agentes de ICE, le advirtió: “Papi, corre, es la migra”. La madre señaló que la menor ha preguntado desde entonces si su padre está bien, si está comiendo y cuándo podrá volver a verlo.
