I did an assignment with my freshmen yesterday… it was a letter to their future selves… when I say 85% of the class didn’t know or was unsure of their address… I had to stop my lesson and write it down for them on a sticky note… this is NOT okay or normal!!!!

I firmly believe this learned helplessness is started in toddlerhood. I think today’s parents don’t have enough expectations for their children at early ages. I’m in Canada so I think our government needs to have parents attend parenting classes to qualify to the birth health care to be financially covered.

I’ve had students come to me, asking me what an email said on their phone for a work program and when I say, “I don’t know, did you read it? What did it say?” “Oh I didn’t read it. Can you?” And then don’t wanna read it when I tell them to read it and ask me again if they don’t understand

As a parent, I am working so hard to combat this, but have no idea how. My son instinctively cannot self start and blames others (he is autistic). I have been working with him since he was a toddler to take accountability, to make the attempt to try, that it’s OK to try and fail. Trying is the most important part. He’s going into high school school next year and we have discussed how no one is going to hold his hand because he is old enough that the teachers are not responsible for him. If you have any advice, that would be fantastic. He is severely behind educationally, but it is hard to get supports for him.

i was raised on the idea that it is ALWAYS okay to ask for help, but i have to take the initiative to do that. i couldn’t agree more with EVERYTHING you said.

I am an elementary school teacher who has had to explain to parents that if your child isn’t doing their work it WILL impact their grades. The pushback I get from parents is insane.

its because they can fail every class and they will most likely get passed right on to the next grade in middle and elementary. that's where this behavior comes from. they don't realize it's different in high school

As a previous teacher and now parent, I am working so hard to prevent this in my kids. I saw another comment about it needing to be taught in elementary and middle school but the problem with that is, those teachers do try to fix it. But you have parents constantly interfering and administrators only caring about test scores and following exact curriculum, less about behavior intervention, and making parents happy.

Agreed. Some students would rather screw around & do nothing during regular class time, because they know that admin & the counselors will allow them to do Edgenuity to make up the credit.

my school doesn't let you give a kid below a 60 on the report card. their gradebook will say 12% avg but you have to ggive them a 60. at best, you might be able to put incomplete there. the schools are at fault too

I grew up with learning difficulties, rather than me blaming the teacher, my parents and I knew that I was struggling and got me into Kumon to support me. I was enrolled from 2nd grade to grade 11 and quit when the material got too advanced for me to understand.

Superintendent and Board of Education do not help with unrealistic graduation rates. My district has a 98% grad rate goal. The pressure on my principal from above to keep kids on cohort to graduate is insane. That also plays a role in this epidemic. So many kids know that ultimately they will get their way with little to no work. Yes, out of control.

ZERO accountability. And the absolute entitlement to expect their teachers to bend over backwards to make sure they pass/get the grade they want. It's exhausting.

The fact that intelligence now is basically just a kid who tries really hard consistently. I have a few learning disabilities and I always tried so damn hard to just pass. I’m a teacher now who has to work very hard to do what I do. I have seen some of my work from the past and I would be getting As and Bs now because at least my work showed effort and understanding.

I’m literally designing a unit about this. Kids need to know they’re being set up to fail and what they can do about it. Absolutely ridiculous.

Absolutely agree with you. It’s so sad and a little bit scary that as a middle school teacher, I’m seeing it as young as 6th grade. That’s why I start out every school year with the concept that I do not GIVE grades, they EARN them, as you stated. I definitely have to reinforce the concept all year by reminding them of this for every assignment and test. It’s my hope that it helps at least a little bit, but again, you’re right — if they are not seeing it at home and with their community, it won’t change.

Question as a high school parent, how do you feel about parents? Emailing the teacher to get insight and help? My son struggles at math and even though we are beginning of the year, he is trying and I’m trying to get him help, but sometimes I feel his teacher gets bothered by my asking for help.
