🙅🏽♀️ :
The newly released anime "Tenmaku no Jaadugar" (Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia) presents a misleading version of history.
After watching the first episodes of Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia (Tenmaku no Jaadugar), which is set during the Mongol Empire, I was deeply disappointed. The anime portrays the Mongols as savage invaders who suddenly attacked the Khwarazmian Empire (Khwarazm) without provocation, destroying its cities and villages. Meanwhile, the main character, Fatima (Sitara), is depicted as an innocent victim. I am genuinely concerned that viewers who are unfamiliar with the historical background may come away with a distorted understanding of history. Therefore, I would like to point out some important historical facts.
1. The Mongols did not invade without a cause (The Otrar Incident)
In 1218, Genghis Khan sent a trade caravan of more than 450 Muslim merchants with around 500 camels to establish commercial relations with the Khwarazmian Empire. However, the governor of Otrar, Inalchuq, accused them of being spies, had them all executed, and confiscated their goods. Genghis Khan then sent diplomats demanding that the governor be handed over for punishment. Instead, the Khwarazmian ruler insulted the envoys, executed some of them, and rejected the request. Because the killing of envoys was considered a grave violation of diplomatic norms, the Mongols launched a military campaign against the Khwarazmian Empire in retaliation.
2. Who was Fatima? In the anime, Sitara (Fatima) is portrayed as a brilliant heroine who opposes the Mongols. However, the historical account recorded by the Persian historian Rashid al-Din in the Compendium of Chronicles (Jami' al-Tawarikh) presents a very different picture.
According to the chronicle, Fatima was a foreign captive woman who gained the trust of Töregene Khatun, the wife of Ögedei Khan, and became involved in court politics. During the reign of Güyük Khan, she was accused of using sorcery to curse and cause the death of Prince Köden (Khuden). As punishment, she was reportedly executed by having all the openings of her body sewn shut, wrapped in felt, and thrown into a river.
