There’s absolutely nothing wrong with traditional rows, but in my home garden I want to use as much of the space as I can. So instead, I think in layers & drifts.🤘 I put the tall stuff where it can grow VERTICALLY! Tomatoes, cucumbers, pole beans, peas and squash get trellises whenever possible. Then I fill the middle with things like peppers, eggplant, zinnias, dahlias, herbs and other medium sized plants. And along the edges? That’s valuable real estate too! Herbs, flowers, strawberries and anything that can spill, trail or tuck into those smaller spaces. I’m also constantly thinking about what each plant is going to look like in August, not what it looks like when I plant it in May. Where will it cast shade? What can grow underneath it? What can climb instead of sprawl? Where can I squeeze in another crop without creating unhealthy competition? That’s a huge part of how I get my gardens so thick and lush while still growing a ridiculous amount of food and flowers. It’s not about cramming plants together just for the sake of cramming them together. It’s about understanding how they grow and using height, habit and space to your advantage. And honestly, I think a productive vegetable garden can be freaking beautiful too. 🌱🌸 Grow vertically, lets plants fill in & spill over to maximize all the space you have. Now THAT’S my kind of gardening.😉 #VegetableGardening #KitchenGarden #IntensiveGardening #GrowYourOwnFood #GardenInspiration
