Graves’ disease is often described as an overactive thyroid, but that’s only part of the story. It’s actually an autoimmune disease. In Graves’ disease, the immune system produces antibodies called TSH receptor antibodies, or TRAb, which bind to receptors on the thyroid and continuously stimulate them. Think of it like someone constantly pressing down on the accelerator. The thyroid responds by producing too much thyroid hormone, which can lead to symptoms like a racing heart, unexplained weight loss, anxiety, tremors, heat intolerance, excessive sweating, frequent bowel movements and difficulty sleeping. Some people also develop Graves’ eye disease, where the autoimmune process affects tissues around the eyes, causing dryness, irritation, swelling and more prominent appearing eyes. This is why it’s important to understand the difference between Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism describes the state of having too much thyroid hormone. Graves’ disease is the autoimmune condition driving it. Treatment absolutely requires appropriate medical management, often alongside an endocrinologist. From a naturopathic perspective, our role is complementary. We’re looking at the bigger picture while someone receives appropriate medical treatment. What does their nutritional status look like? Are there deficiencies that need addressing? What is happening with their gut health? How are they sleeping? And how can we safely support their overall health alongside treatment? Because with Graves’, we’re not only thinking about thyroid hormone. We’re thinking about the autoimmune process behind it. If you’ve been diagnosed with Graves’ disease, hyperthyroidism or another thyroid condition, Toni works extensively with thyroid, women’s hormonal and metabolic health at Nourishing Apothecary. You can book a FREE Discovery Call with Toni through the Nourishing Apothecary website. Consultations are available via Zoom Australia wide. Not sure who to book with? DM us CLINIC and we’ll send you a quick form. Our Patient Care Coordinator will give you a call, learn a little about what you need help with and match you with the practitioner on our team best suited to your case. #gravesdisease #hyperthyroidism #thyroidhealth #thyroid #autoimmunity
