So, to answer your question: why India? Because India produces an enormous number of graduates every year in engineering, IT, medicine, business and other skilled professions. It has a strong STEM education base and a young population that’s hardworking and wants to build careers. India’s median age is around 28, which is much younger than countries like Italy, the UK and most of Europe. Now why not Italy? Because Italy has one of the oldest populations in the world and not enough young people entering the workforce. Why not the UK? Australia already has a large number of skilled migrants from the UK. They’ve consistently been one of the biggest migrant groups here. However, not all UK migrants arrive through skilled migration pathways. Many come through family, working holiday, student and other visa categories. As for other European countries, they also produce highly skilled graduates. The difference is that their populations are much smaller, and many of those countries are dealing with ageing populations and their own labour shortages. That’s why India has become one of the world’s largest sources of highly skilled migrants. Australia doesn’t recruit skilled migrants based on nationality, it recruits people with the skills the country needs. Indians make up a large share of those migrants because of the size of the talent pool. They also make a significant contribution to Australia’s economy through their work and the taxes they pay. So before making broad claims, it’s worth looking at the facts.
