you could still maneuver the tank since it isn't base to base. the rule states that only models that are base to base cannot be moved, so if engaged through a wall, youre not base to base, so you could pile in away from attacking models, as long as you're piling in closer to the closest model

Dylan Wentz :
The pile in move only specifies that a model must stay in engagement range of any unit it was engaged with, not any model

It would be great if there were rules that you could understand without having to scroll through five different places. But that's just my humble opinion. What do I know?

ok but in your first example isnt the whole group of models the enemy "unit"? the rules say as long as you stay engaged with the "unit" you are fine you don't necessarily have to stay engaged with the same "model" in that "unit"

Under units and models section, it looks like that rule applies to of there is no specification on an enemy unit or friendly units, which all the other rules do specify and all the other rules say enemy unit. I don't see it checking a model at all. I think with the changes with charges having to end base to base contact, they have to be able to move a little since your charge would dictate the entire fight phase, pile in, models that can attack, etc.

It says engagement with enemy unit, not enemy model. So as long as your pile in move is still engaged with any one model in the enemy unit, you are okay. So yes, you go all the way around the unit, even if it means no longer being within engagement of the starting models, because you are still engaged with the unit
