I haven't seen them since I was a kid in the 70s. what memories they bring. warm summer nights and the smell of fresh cut grass. barefoot tan kids chasing them and the glow of the glass jar.

If there’s is a good rainy season you will see them when the ground is dry and hard to dig through that’s when I don’t see them as much if it’s a real bad dry season the larvae will just hibernate till the ground gets soft again this year in Missouri they are everywhere we’ve had a good rain lots of water an every creature is popping everything is healthy that I’ve seen anyway does with 2 or more dawns thriving lush an green

If you’re not crammed in door to door in a city you could see them every night. They aren’t gonna go where all this light pollution is.

Anyone that’s born in the 70’s and 80’s knows what lightning bug season is supposed to look like, they have absolutely gone way down, some years we didn’t see any in the last 10 years, but this year we are seeing some decent numbers, not as much as in the 80’s though, not even close

For those looking to help fireflies you need to stop using pesticide specifically towards beetle species those types are the most lethal (pesticide in general is bad but specific ones can be worst then the standard) no light pollution male and female need darkness to see each other for mating allow your yard or a an environment of allowing the grass to grow long, the limbs rot on the ground, and the leaves pile up, they need moisture and darkness these are the ways to make a healthy ecosystem for the fireflies now a hopeful side of information there is a rise of firefly sanctuaries in development
