@amxrrs0: Srebrenica (July 1995) The Srebrenica genocide took place during the Bosnian War. It is widely recognized as the worst mass atrocity in Europe since World War II. What happened? * In July 1995, the town of Srebrenica in eastern Bosnia had been declared a UN “safe area” and was protected by Dutch UN peacekeepers. * On 11 July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces led by Ratko Mladić captured the town. * Over the following days, more than 8,000 Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) men and boys were separated from their families and systematically executed. * Around 25,000–30,000 women, children, and elderly people were forcibly expelled from the area. Why did it happen? The killings were part of a campaign of ethnic cleansing aimed at removing the Bosniak population from eastern Bosnia and securing territory for the Bosnian Serb leadership during the war. International response The massacre occurred despite the presence of UN peacekeepers, who were unable to stop the Bosnian Serb forces. The failure to protect civilians has been widely criticized and led to major debates about UN peacekeeping. Was it genocide? Yes. International courts, including the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice, ruled that the killings at Srebrenica constituted genocide. Aftermath * Thousands of victims have since been identified using DNA analysis from mass graves. * Many perpetrators were prosecuted. * Ratko Mladić was convicted of genocide and sentenced to life imprisonment. * In 2024, the United Nations designated 11 July as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica. Srebrenica remains a symbol of the consequences of ethnic hatred, the importance of protecting civilians during war, and the need for accountability and remembrance.#bosnia #srebrenica #un #fyp #muslim
