Eggplants grown vertically on aeroponic towers are planted with two plants per growing level, for a total of 18 plants per tower. This spacing provides enough room for the plants to develop while maintaining good light penetration and airflow. As the plants grow, the branches become heavy with fruit, so a grow cage must be installed to support the branches and prevent them from breaking. After testing multiple varieties, we found that Thanos consistently produced the highest yields on our aeroponic towers. It also has a spineless calyx. The calyx is the green cap at the top of the fruit where it attaches to the stem. Many eggplant varieties have sharp spines on the calyx, making harvesting uncomfortable. The spineless calyx of the Thanos variety makes harvesting faster and easier. Seeds are sown in trays filled with agricultural rock wool, a soilless growing medium made from basalt rock. After sowing, the seeds are covered with a thin layer of vermiculite to hold them in place, retain moisture, and improve germination. The seedlings are ready for transplanting after approximately three weeks, once they have developed at least two true leaves. The first eggplants are ready for harvest approximately 65 days after transplanting. By around 75 days, the plants reach full production. We harvest the mature fruit regularly to encourage continued flowering and fruit production throughout the growing season. #eggplant #farming #gardening #agriculture #horticulture
