This is a bit of a different one from me today, but I wanted to do a deep dive into the Rwanda policy. What does it mean? Is it illegal? And most crucially, will it StOp ThE bOaTs? I’m sure you’ve heard a lot of talk about Rwanda in the news, and sadly, I’m sure you’ll keep hearing about it. But there is SO much misinformation out there and both our government and the right-wing media are peddling lies in order to stoke culture wars and turn us against some of society’s most vulnerable people. So I thought I’d break it down. I want to draw attention to the fact that the Rwanda plan will cost £1.8m for each of the first 300 asylum seekers, according to the National Audit office. That’s our tax payer money. Imagine where else that money could go? I also want to say that I don’t mind healthy discussion around what to do with asylum seekers and how we can best accommodate people. But what I don’t like is the dehumanisation of actual people who need support, and the inaccurate claim that these human beings are “illegal”. You cannot be an illegal asylum seeker. Those on board the original flight were toture survivors, victims of traficking, & unaccompanied minors. I just cannot imagine what these people have already experienced. I often wonder what it must be like having to flee our own country and people from other countries not only turning our backs on us, but demonising us too. I also can’t stop thinking of all those people needlessly dying at sea when there could be safe and legal routes. Just like we provided to citizens of Hong Kong and Ukraine. Remember, Tory donors are getting very wealthy from housing asylum seekers in hotels, and the government does not allow them to work (so they can pay back into the system) and they’re not processing their asylum claims quick enough. There is only one group of people to blame for the lack of affordable housing and the long NHS wait times - and that is the Conservative government. I hope you enjoy the video & learn something from it :) Next time I want to tackle the ECHR…
