As a former SAHW/SAHM yes. Yes 100%. I didn’t have dreams or confidence. I had no emotional maturity. I didn’t know what to do. It was the easy way out, I went from parents to a husband.

My husband had Peter Pan syndrome and I’m finally leaving after 10 years because I have literally done everything for 10 years. I’m 31 now.

Hmmm yes but there is an element being ignored here. Example, my grandma was essentially this. However a big reason for it is because A) it was the 1960s so that was kind of the norm, but majorly B) she is 100% undiagnosed autistic and dyspraxic. There were a lot of physical and mental limitations for her that, undiagnosed/unmedicated were practically impossible for her to cope with. I say this as her grandson who is also autistic, dyspraxic and has a touch of this “Peter Pan syndrome” through the lens of a fem gay man. Trying to be independent is definitely the standard as it should be, but a lot of the prerequisites to independence are constructed through the lens and abilities of neurotypical people to mentally cope with them. That isn’t to say that full independent autonomy is bad, it’s probably the most noble goal on the planet; and that’s also not to say that neurodivergent people can’t achieve it. We absolutely can achieve it. The issue is that so many of the hoops to jump through and milestones to hit for independent autonomy ARE in fact easier to reach and mentally work for and cope with when you’re neurotypical, bc they’re constructed by and for neurotypical people living in a neurotypical world

I often think about the girls I went to Catholic school with and how it's hard to even find them on social media cause their last names are different now. most of them are on kids 2+ and are SAHM. I spent a lot of my 20s being judgemental about their life paths. now I just hope they have kind husbands and good friends. and if they ever find themselves no longer married and needing support, i would be there for them!

My mother got divorced at 60 years old after 40 years of having kids and she's been in a relationship since she was 19 and I think that's what she's been dealing with It really affects everyone involved too. It puts a lot of strain on the relationships with their kids as well and I don't think that's talked about enough either

Growing up is scary. Freedom is wonderful but it takes a lot of work. Unfortunately, it’s the kind of thing you don’t know you need until you don’t have it.

I’m so glad someone is saying this! I keep asking these girls do you want to be a wife or do you not want to work and have responsibilities? Cause if you’re a wife you WILL have responsibilities still. No you won’t have to work if you’re a SAHM but there’s still stuff to do. I truly don’t think a lot of these young girls are thinking it through. They’re seeing it as a father figure essentially. Someone to pay their way, do everything for them, and all they do is just exist. I truly worry for them cause what happens if it fails or he dies? Now you’re thrown into reality all at once.

yes this was me at 18. my parents really pushed for me to immediately get married because they were worried I wouldnt be able to take care of myself (I wasn't disabled or anything but very helpless back then) and now I'm 22 and it was a hard journey but nothing is better than living alone and spending my money on whatever I want.

I'm glad my mom divorced my dad, it taught me a shitty relationship is always worse than being single and a rushed relationship doesn't last.

I know I shouldn’t wish for this life but lordt I’d love to be a “Peter Pan Woman” for just like… a year, that’s all. I’ve had to be the highly competent person and do everything myself my entire adult life (and even in childhood!!) and I’m tireddd 😭 But at least I have full control and power over my life I guess lol

I wanted to be a Peter Pan woman. I am grateful looking back that life circumstances forced me to become an adult, but it wasn’t until I entered my 30s that I realized this.

I’m not planning on getting in any kind of relationship but I do still live at home and I also feel a resistance to growing up. Does anyone have advice for what can I do to start wanting to be a competent adult/stop wanting to just not do anything?

I know that this might be the case for some women…but definitely not all. I’m a SAHM, I’ve worked and provided for myself and lived independently. I stay home because it’s cost effective and benefits my marriage and children. I manage all the finances in my marriage… I probably will not return to the workforce after my children are grown because I will likely be caring for our elderly parents.
